The Maltese Archipelago lies virtually in the centre of the Mediterranean.  This simple fact has been of paramount importance in shaping the Island’s history through the centuries.  Today, the culture of Malta is a reflection of a number of civilisations that have either conquered the Island or traded with it.  These included neighbouring Mediterranean countries but others from more far afield.

Beyond the northern coast of Malta lies the stunning Island of Gozo.  Although only separated from Malta by a 6km stretch or a short twenty minute ferry ride, it is distinctively different.  Due to the greater presence of blue clay, the island is much greener than Malta.  It is much more rural and fishing is still an important industry.  The main town has a beautiful fortified citadel with some splendid townhouses and a small cathedral.  Whilst most of the island’s coast is made up of cliffs, the valleys which run down to the sea end up in beautiful seaside villages or beaches, such as the crystal clear waters of Ramla Bay.

Comino’s barren landscape contrasts greatly with Gozo’s more lush greenery.  It covers an area of only 1.5 sq kms with a handful of residents living permanently there.  The main attraction on the island is the Blue Lagoon, with its turquoise waters and surrounding caverns.
